Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required for Hemerocallis seeds.
Sowing:
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date or sow directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
If starting indoors, sow seeds in seed trays filled with well-draining seed starting mix. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface, and keep the soil consistently moist.
If sowing outdoors, prepare a seedbed by loosening the soil to a depth of 6-8 inches and removing any weeds or debris. Scatter seeds over the prepared soil surface and cover lightly with a thin layer of soil.
Germination:
Hemerocallis seeds typically germinate within 14-21 days under optimal conditions.
Maintain consistent moisture during the germination period, but avoid overwatering to prevent seed rot.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date, spacing them 12-18 inches apart.
Choose a location with well-drained soil and adequate sunlight for optimal growth.
Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball of the seedling, gently place the seedling in the hole, and backfill with soil. Water thoroughly after transplanting to help settle the soil around the roots.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during periods of dry weather. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to disease.
Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Deadheading: Remove spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming and prevent self-seeding.
Dividing: Every 3-4 years, divide overcrowded clumps of Hemerocallis to rejuvenate the plants and promote better flowering.
