Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation: Scarify seeds by lightly sanding the seed coat with sandpaper to improve water absorption. Soak seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours before planting to enhance germination.
Sowing: Sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, either in pots or directly in the garden if conditions are suitable. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep and space them 6-12 inches apart if planting in the ground. Cover seeds lightly with soil and mist to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
Germination: Seeds typically germinate within 14-21 days under optimal conditions. Maintain soil temperature between 70-85°F (21-29°C) and provide plenty of light, ideally in a greenhouse or a sunny windowsill.
Transplanting: Transplant seedlings outdoors once they have developed a few sets of true leaves and all danger of frost has passed. Gradually acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions over a week by placing them outside for a few hours each day, increasing the time daily. Space transplants 12-18 inches apart to allow for growth.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
Mulching: Apply a layer of gravel mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Fertilizing: Fertilize sparingly with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer during the growing season.
Support: Generally not required, but ensure the planting site is sheltered from strong winds.
