Sowing Guidelines
Indoor Sowing:
Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost.
Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in seed trays or containers filled with fertile, well-draining soil.
Maintain soil temperature between 65-75°F (18-24°C) for best germination.
Transplant seedlings outdoors once soil temperature is above 50°F (10°C) and nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F (10°C).
Outdoor Sowing:
Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last frost, when soil temperature is at least 50°F (10°C).
Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing them about 6 inches apart in rows.
Thin seedlings to 8-12 inches apart once they are established to allow for full root development.
Germination
Swede seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days under optimal conditions.
Keep soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering.
Spacing & Growing Conditions
Within Rows: Thin to 8-12 inches apart once seedlings have grown large enough.
Between Rows: Space rows about 18-24 inches apart for proper airflow and root development.
Mulching: Apply organic mulch to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
Care & Maintenance
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost at planting, and side-dress with additional nitrogen-rich fertilizer once plants are established.
Weed Control: Keep the planting area free of weeds, as they compete with the plants for nutrients and space.
Pest & Disease Control: Watch for pests such as aphids, root maggots, and caterpillars. Use organic pest control methods or row covers if necessary.
Harvesting
Swede Roots: Ready to harvest when roots are 6-8 inches in diameter, typically 90-100 days after sowing.
For the best flavor, allow the roots to mature after the first light frost. A light frost enhances the sweetness and texture of the roots.
To harvest, gently lift the roots from the soil using a spade or fork, taking care not to damage them.
Storage
Store swedes in a cool, dark, and dry place for several months.
Swedes can be stored in the ground throughout the winter, provided they are mulched heavily to protect them from extreme cold.
