Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Sweet potatoes are typically grown from slips (shoots grown from a mature sweet potato) rather than direct seeds. To prepare slips, place a healthy, organic sweet potato in water or moist soil in a warm, sunny location. Allow slips to grow until they are 6-12 inches long, then carefully twist them off the sweet potato.
Sowing:
Plant slips directly outdoors after the last frost date when the soil temperature is consistently above 70°F (21°C). Prepare the planting bed by loosening the soil and adding compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility and drainage. Plant slips 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart in rows spaced 3 feet (90 cm) apart. Bury the slips up to their top leaves, and water them well.
Germination:
Although not grown from seeds, ensuring proper conditions for slip growth and rooting is essential. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until the slips are established and begin to grow.
Transplanting:
No additional transplanting is necessary as slips are planted directly in their final location. Ensure slips have enough space to grow and spread by maintaining proper spacing during initial planting.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Sweet potatoes need consistent moisture but should not sit in waterlogged soil. Mulch around plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the soil warm. Monitor for pests such as sweet potato weevils and diseases like root rot, and treat as necessary using organic methods. Harvest sweet potatoes 90-120 days after planting when the leaves begin to yellow. Carefully dig up the tubers, curing them in a warm, dry place for 1-2 weeks to enhance sweetness and storage life.
