Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required, but for faster germination, you can soak the seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting.
Sowing:
Sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost date when soil temperatures are at least 60°F (16°C). Scatter seeds thinly and cover with a light layer of soil, about 1/4 inch deep. Space rows 12-18 inches apart.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 10-14 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist during the germination period, but avoid waterlogging.
Transplanting:
Dill does not transplant well due to its long taproot. It is best to sow seeds directly in their permanent location. If starting indoors, use biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance and transplant seedlings carefully.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Thinning: Thin seedlings to about 12 inches apart once they are large enough to handle to reduce competition. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Harvesting: Harvest dill leaves as needed once the plants reach 8 inches tall. For seeds, allow the flower heads to mature and turn brown, then cut them and hang them upside down in a paper bag to dry. Shake the bag to release the seeds.
Happy gardening!
