Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Golden Harvest seeds do not typically require any special preparation before planting. However, scarification (lightly scratching or nicking the seed coat) may help to improve germination rates.
Sowing:
Plant the seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in a well-draining potting mix or directly into the ground if planting outdoors. Space seeds at least 6-12 inches apart if planting in pots or seed trays.
Germination:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Maintain a temperature of 60-70°F (15-21°C) for optimal germination. Germination typically occurs within 2-4 weeks, but it can sometimes take longer.
Transplanting:
Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle, they can be transplanted into larger containers or directly into the garden. If planting outdoors, ensure all danger of frost has passed and space the shrubs at least 3-6 feet apart to allow for proper growth and air circulation.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water newly planted seedlings regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Once established, Golden Harvest shrubs are relatively drought-tolerant but benefit from regular watering during prolonged dry periods. Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring to remove dead or damaged wood and to shape the shrub. Pruning also helps to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration, leading to better flowering and fruiting. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub to retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep the mulch several inches away from the trunk to prevent rot. Harvesting: Golden Harvest Chaenomeles produce small, apple-like fruits that are typically ready to harvest in late summer to early fall. The fruits are ripe when they are slightly soft to the touch and have a bright yellow color. Gently twist or cut the fruits from the shrub to harvest.
Happy gardening!
