Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Basil seeds do not require special preparation. If you want to speed up germination, you can soak the seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours before planting, but this is optional.
Sowing:
Indoor Sowing: Start seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Use seed-starting mix and scatter seeds on the surface of the soil. Lightly press seeds into the soil but do not cover them. Outdoor Sowing: Sow seeds directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature is consistently 70°F (21°C) or warmer. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 6-12 inches apart.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Maintain a temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C) for best germination results.
Transplanting:
Indoor Seedlings: Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when they have at least 2 sets of true leaves. Harden them off gradually by exposing them to outdoor conditions over 5-7 days before transplanting. Spacing: Space plants 12-18 inches apart to allow for their mature size and good air circulation.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Basil prefers consistently moist soil but not waterlogged conditions. Pruning: Regularly pinch off the tips of the plants to encourage bushier growth and prevent flowering, which can cause the leaves to become bitter. Harvesting: Harvest leaves as needed once the plants are 6-8 inches tall. Pick leaves from the top of the plant to encourage new growth.
