Planting Instructions
Seed Preparation:
Beet seeds generally do not require any special preparation before planting.
Sowing:
Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring when the soil is workable and temperatures are consistently above freezing.
Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
Germination:
Germination typically occurs within 7-14 days, depending on soil temperature and moisture levels.
Keep the soil evenly moist during the germination period.
Transplanting:
Beetroots are usually directly seeded outdoors and do not transplant well due to their taproot structure.
If starting indoors, use biodegradable pots planted directly in the ground to minimise root disturbance.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Maintain even moisture throughout the growing season, especially during dry periods. Avoid waterlogging, as it can lead to rotting of roots.
Thinning: Once seedlings are a few inches tall, thin them to 3-4 inches apart to allow adequate room for root development.
Weed Control: Keep the planting area free of weeds, which can compete for nutrients and water.
Pest and Disease Management: Monitor for pests such as aphids and leaf miners. Use insecticidal soap or other organic methods as needed. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
Harvesting: Harvest beetroot roots when they reach 1-3 inches in diameter, usually 50-70 days after planting. Greens can be harvested throughout the growing season.
