Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required for thyme seeds.
Sowing:
Scatter seeds lightly over the prepared soil surface or sow them in seed-starting trays or pots filled with a well-draining seed starting mix. Press the seeds gently into the soil surface and lightly cover with a thin layer of soil.
Germination:
Germination usually occurs within 14-21 days when kept consistently moist and at a temperature of 60-70°F (15-21°C). Mist the soil surface regularly to keep it moist but not waterlogged. Covering the trays with plastic wrap or a clear plastic lid can help retain moisture and humidity.
Transplanting:
Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves and are large enough to handle, transplant them into their final growing location. Space plants 6-12 inches apart to allow for spreading. Choose a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained soil.
Care and Maintenance:
Water young plants regularly, especially during dry spells, to help establish roots. Once established, thyme is drought-tolerant and generally only needs watering during prolonged dry periods. Avoid overwatering, as thyme is susceptible to root rot in waterlogged soil. Trim back plants after flowering to encourage bushier growth and prevent them from becoming leggy. Mulch around plants to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
