Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Squash seeds generally do not require any special preparation before planting. However, if you want to give them a head start, you can soak the seeds in water overnight to soften the seed coat.
Sowing:
Choose a sunny location in your garden with well-draining soil. Once the soil has warmed to at least 70°F (21°C), sow the squash seeds directly into the garden bed. Plant the seeds about 1 inch deep and 2-3 seeds per mound. Space the mounds about 3-6 feet apart, depending on the variety of squash you are growing.
Germination:
Squash seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days when planted in warm soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period to ensure successful sprouting.
Transplanting:
If you prefer to start your squash seeds indoors or if you live in a cooler climate, you can start them in biodegradable pots filled with seed starting mix about 2-3 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Once the seedlings have developed a few true leaves and the danger of frost has passed, they can be transplanted into the garden. Transplant the seedlings carefully, being sure not to disturb the roots. Plant them at the same depth they were growing in their pots and space them according to the recommendations for your specific squash variety.
Care and Maintenance:
Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing season, especially during periods of hot, dry weather. Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to disease. Mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Monitor the plants regularly for signs of pests and diseases, such as squash bugs, vine borers, and powdery mildew. Treat any issues promptly to prevent them from spreading. Harvest the squash fruits when they reach the desired size and color. Cut them from the vine using sharp scissors or pruners, leaving a short stem attached.
Happy gardening!
