Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in water for 6-12 hours before planting to enhance germination.
Sowing:
Indoor Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed trays or pots filled with seed-starting mix. Outdoor Sowing: Direct sow seeds in the garden after the last frost date when the soil temperature is consistently above 50°F (10°C). Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart, thinning seedlings to 12-18 inches apart depending on the variety.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 5-10 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 4-6 weeks old and have at least two sets of true leaves. Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before transplanting. Space transplants 12-24 inches apart in rows spaced 18-36 inches apart, depending on the variety.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Brassica plants prefer consistent moisture but do not tolerate waterlogged soil. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Support: Some taller varieties may require staking to prevent lodging. Harvesting: Harvest Brassica oleracea crops according to the specific variety. For example, harvest cabbage when heads are firm, broccoli when the flower heads are tight and before the yellow flowers open, and kale leaves as needed.
