Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting to improve germination rates.
Sowing:
Plant seeds directly in the garden after the last frost date when soil temperatures are consistently above 55-60°F (13-16°C). Sow seeds 1 inch deep and 2-3 inches apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 7-10 days under optimal conditions. Maintain consistent moisture during the germination period, but avoid waterlogging the soil.
Transplanting:
Direct sowing is recommended for edamame due to its sensitive root system. If starting seeds indoors, use biodegradable pots to minimize root disturbance, and transplant seedlings outdoors once they have 2-3 true leaves and after hardening off.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and pod development. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Support: Edamame plants are generally sturdy but may benefit from some support if they become top-heavy with pods. Harvesting: Harvest pods when they are bright green and plump, usually 70-90 days after sowing. Pods should be harvested before they start to yellow for the best flavor.
