Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required. However, soaking seeds in warm water for a few hours before planting can help speed up germination.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date or directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. If starting indoors, use seed-starting trays filled with a seed-starting mix. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart. If direct sowing, plant seeds 1/4 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days under optimal conditions. Maintain a soil temperature of 60-70°F (15-21°C) for best germination results. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when they have at least 2-3 true leaves. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Space seedlings 12-18 inches apart in rows, or cluster plantings to create a fuller look.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Harvesting: Begin harvesting leaves once the plants are established, typically 60-90 days after planting. Cut leaves close to the base to encourage new growth. Maintenance: Remove any flower stalks if you want to encourage more leaf growth. If left to flower, garlic chives will self-seed and can spread in the garden.
