Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Geranium seeds typically do not require any special preparation before planting. However, you can soak the seeds in lukewarm water for a few hours to soften the seed coat and encourage quicker germination.
Sowing:
Choose a sunny to partially shaded location in your garden with well-draining soil. Prepare the planting area by loosening the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches and removing any weeds or debris. Sow the geranium seeds directly into the soil after the last frost date in your area. Alternatively, you can start seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost and transplant seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
Germination:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period. Germination typically occurs within 7 to 14 days, but it may take longer in cooler temperatures.
Transplanting:
When the seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves and are large enough to handle, thin them to the desired spacing if necessary. If starting seeds indoors, transplant the seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up.
Care and Maintenance:
Water the geranium plants regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil evenly moist. Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming and prevent seed formation, which can reduce flower production. Monitor for pests such as aphids, whiteflies, and spider mites, and treat promptly if necessary. Provide support such as stakes or cages for taller varieties to prevent them from bending or breaking in windy conditions. Remove any yellowing or dead leaves to improve air circulation and prevent disease.
Where flowers bloom, so does hope.
Happy gardening!
