Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Scarification: Laburnum seeds have a hard outer coat. To improve germination, scarify the seeds by lightly sanding the seed coat or soaking them in hot water (not boiling) for 24 hours. Stratification: After scarification, stratify the seeds by placing them in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag and refrigerating them for 4-6 weeks.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors or in a cold frame after the stratification period. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Space seeds 2-3 inches apart in seed trays or pots.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 2-4 weeks under optimal conditions. Maintain a soil temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C) and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
When seedlings have developed 2-3 true leaves and are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots. Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week before planting them in their permanent location. Plant young trees in a location with full sun to partial shade, spacing them 15-25 feet apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water young trees regularly to establish a strong root system. Once established, Laburnum trees are relatively drought-tolerant but benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the tree to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches and to maintain a healthy structure. Avoid heavy pruning as Laburnum trees prefer minimal disturbance.
