Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required. However, soaking seeds in water for 24 hours before planting can help soften the seed coat and improve germination rates.
Sowing:
Plant seeds directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures are consistently above 70°F (21°C). Create mounds or hills of soil spaced 5-6 feet apart in rows spaced 6-8 feet apart. Plant 4-6 seeds per mound, 1 inch deep, and space seeds 6-8 inches apart within the mound.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 7-10 days under optimal conditions. Maintain consistent soil moisture during the germination period, but avoid overwatering, as this can lead to rot.
Transplanting:
Transplanting is not recommended for watermelon seeds, as they do not transplant well due to their sensitive root systems.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Provide deep, consistent watering to keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season. Water at the base of the plants to prevent fungal diseases. Mulching: Apply a thick layer of organic mulch, such as straw or shredded leaves, around the base of the plants to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the fruit from direct contact with the soil. Support: If growing watermelon on a trellis, provide support for the vines as they grow. Use soft ties to gently secure the vines to the trellis to prevent damage.
Happy gardening!
