Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special seed preparation is required for Heirloom Grey Zucchini Squash Seeds. However, soaking the seeds in lukewarm water for 4-6 hours before planting can help promote quicker germination.
Sowing:
Directly sow seeds outdoors after the last frost date when the soil has warmed up to at least 60°F (16°C). Plant seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep in well-prepared soil. Space seeds 24 to 36 inches (60 to 90 cm) apart in rows, with rows spaced 36 to 48 inches (90 to 120 cm) apart.
Germination:
Zucchini seeds typically germinate within 7 to 10 days when kept at a constant temperature of around 70-85°F (21-29°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
If starting seeds indoors, sow them 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost date. Transplant seedlings outdoors when they have at least two sets of true leaves and all danger of frost has passed. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before transplanting.
Care and Maintenance:
Water zucchini plants regularly, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around plants to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Provide support for zucchini plants using stakes or cages if necessary, especially if they start to sprawl. Monitor for pests such as squash bugs, cucumber beetles, and powdery mildew, and treat as necessary using organic methods. Harvest grey zucchinis when they reach 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) in length for the best flavor and texture. Use a sharp knife or pruning shears to cut the fruit from the plant, leaving a short stem attached.
Happy gardening!
