Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Cut seed potatoes into pieces, ensuring each piece has at least one or two "eyes" (sprouts). Allow the cut pieces to dry and form a callus over the cut surface for 1-2 days to reduce the risk of rot.
Sowing:
Plant seed potatoes in early spring, 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost date. Dig trenches or individual planting holes 4-6 inches deep and place seed pieces 12 inches apart, with rows spaced 24-36 inches apart. Cover seed pieces with 2-3 inches of soil initially.
Germination:
Potato plants typically emerge 2-3 weeks after planting, depending on soil temperature and moisture levels. As plants grow, gradually mound soil around the base of the plants to protect developing tubers from light and to support the plants.
Transplanting:
Direct sowing is recommended for potatoes. However, if starting indoors, ensure seedlings are hardened off properly before transplanting outside. Follow the same spacing and hilling instructions as for direct sowing.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during tuber formation, but avoid waterlogging. Mulching: Apply mulch around plants to retain soil moisture, control weeds, and protect tubers from sunlight. Hilling: Continue to mound soil around plants as they grow to promote higher yields and protect tubers.
