Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Leek seeds do not require special preparation, but soaking them in water for 24 hours before planting can improve germination rates.
Sowing:
Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Sow seeds in seed-starting trays or small pots filled with seed-starting mix. Scatter seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them in, but do not cover with soil. Maintain a soil temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C) for optimal germination.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 10-14 days under optimal conditions. Provide consistent moisture and ensure seedlings receive adequate light.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are 4-6 inches tall and after the last frost date. Prepare the garden bed by digging in compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility. Space plants 6-8 inches apart in rows that are 12-18 inches apart. Make trenches about 2-3 inches deep and place seedlings in the trench, covering the roots but leaving the top of the seedlings exposed.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. As leeks grow, you can add additional soil around the base of the plants to lengthen the white stem. Mulch around plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Leeks can be overwintered in the garden; mulch heavily in colder climates to protect plants from frost.
