Shelf Life : Best planted within 1 year for maximum germination
Planting Instructions
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before planting to soften the seed coat and encourage quicker germination.
Sowing:
Direct sow the seeds outdoors after the last frost date when the soil temperature reaches at least 70°F (21°C). Plant seeds 1 inch deep in hills or rows. If planting in hills: Space hills 3 to 4 feet apart and plant 4-5 seeds per hill, thinning to the strongest 2-3 seedlings. If planting in rows: Space seeds 2-3 feet apart in rows that are 3-4 feet apart.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate in 7-10 days under ideal conditions. Maintain consistent soil moisture during the germination period.
Transplanting:
If starting seeds indoors, plant seeds in biodegradable pots 2-4 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant seedlings outdoors when they have 2-3 true leaves and all danger of frost has passed. Ensure to harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7-10 days before transplanting.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly, aiming for 1-2 inches per week, and mulch to retain soil moisture and control weeds. Apply a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks to encourage healthy growth. Provide support if necessary to keep the fruit off the ground, such as stakes or a small trellis. Monitor for pests such as squash bugs and aphids, and apply organic pest control methods as needed. Harvest fruits when they are 4-6 inches in diameter for the best flavor and texture. Regular harvesting encourages continued production.
