Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required for lettuce seeds. However, soaking the seeds in water for a few hours before planting can help speed up germination.
Sowing:
Direct Sowing: Prepare the planting bed by loosening the soil to a depth of 8-10 inches and mixing in compost or a balanced fertilizer. Scatter the seeds evenly over the soil surface or plant them in rows spaced about 12-18 inches apart. Cover the seeds lightly with 1/4 inch of soil or compost. Indoor Sowing: Fill seed trays or small pots with seed-starting mix. Sow the seeds thinly on the surface and cover them lightly with 1/4 inch of the mix. Water gently to settle the seeds.
Germination:
Lettuce seeds germinate best at temperatures between 60-70°F (15-21°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 7-14 days.
Transplanting:
Direct-Sown Seeds: Thin the seedlings to 6-12 inches apart when they have 2-3 true leaves, allowing adequate space for growth. Indoor-Sown Seeds: Transplant the seedlings outdoors when they have 2-3 true leaves and after the risk of frost has passed. Space the transplants 6-12 inches apart in rows 12-18 inches apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the leaves. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvesting: Harvest leaf lettuce by cutting the outer leaves 1 inch above the base, allowing the center to continue growing. For whole heads, cut the plant at the soil level when it reaches the desired size. Regular harvesting encourages new growth and extends the harvest period.
Happy gardening!
