Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required for muskmelon seeds. Store seeds in a cool, dry place until planting.
Sowing:
Plant seeds directly in the garden after the last frost date when the soil temperature is consistently above 70°F (21°C). Sow seeds 1 inch deep in mounds or hills spaced 4-6 feet apart. Plant 4-5 seeds per mound and thin to the 2-3 strongest seedlings per mound after germination.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 7-10 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
Muskmelons are best sown directly in the soil. If starting indoors, sow seeds in biodegradable pots 2-4 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when the soil has warmed.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and fruit set. Reduce watering as fruits approach maturity to enhance sweetness. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Support: Provide support for the vines, such as trellises or garden netting, to keep the fruit off the ground and prevent rotting. Harvesting: Harvest muskmelons when they emit a sweet fragrance, the skin changes color slightly, and the fruit easily detaches from the vine. This is usually 75-90 days after planting. Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the fruit from the vine, leaving a short stem attached.
