Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Scarify seeds by rubbing them lightly with sandpaper or soaking them in warm water for 24 hours before planting. This helps break down the seed coat and improve germination rates.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date or directly outdoors in spring after the risk of frost has passed. For indoor sowing, use a seed-starting mix and plant seeds 1/8 inch (3 mm) deep in seed trays or pots. Maintain a soil temperature of 65-70°F (18-21°C) for optimal germination. Space seeds about 1 inch (2.5 cm) apart if sowing in trays.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 2-4 weeks under optimal conditions. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date and once they have at least two sets of true leaves. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Plant seedlings 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart in well-drained soil.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy. Mulch around the base of the plants to help retain soil moisture and control weeds. Prune back any dead or damaged growth in late winter or early spring to encourage new growth.
