Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation required. However, lightly scarifying seeds by rubbing them with sandpaper can improve germination rates. If scarifying, do so gently to avoid damaging the seeds.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date or directly outdoors after the last frost when the soil temperature is consistently above 60°F (16°C). For indoor sowing, use seed-starting mix and sow seeds on the surface of the soil, pressing them lightly in. Space seeds about 1 inch apart in seed trays or pots. For direct sowing outdoors, scatter seeds evenly and cover lightly with soil.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 14-21 days under optimal conditions. Maintain consistent moisture but avoid waterlogging. Keep seeds in a warm, bright location or under grow lights.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date and once they have developed a few true leaves. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting in the garden. Space plants 12-18 inches apart to allow for mature growth.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Apply a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Mulch around the base of the plants to help retain soil moisture and prevent weed growth. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and prevent self-seeding if desired.
