Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Stratify the seeds by placing them in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag. Refrigerate for 2-4 weeks to simulate winter conditions and improve germination rates.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Fill seed trays or pots with a fine seed-starting mix. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface of the soil and press them in lightly without covering, as they need light to germinate. Mist the soil gently to moisten without displacing the seeds.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 14-28 days under optimal conditions. Maintain a consistent temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C) during the germination period. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and they have developed at least two true leaves. Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7-10 days. Plant seedlings 12-18 inches apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart, in well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Choose a location with full sun to partial shade for optimal growth.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruiting periods, but avoid waterlogging. Water at the base of the plants to prevent fungal diseases. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the fruit clean. Pruning: Remove any runners (long stems that develop new plants) unless you want to propagate more plants. Trim dead leaves and overgrown foliage to maintain good airflow and plant health.
Happy gardening!
