Shelf Life: Best planted within 1 year for maximum germination
Planting Instructions
Seed Preparation
No special preparation is needed, but for faster germination, you can soak the seeds in lukewarm water for a few hours before planting.
Sowing
Soil Preparation: Use a well-draining potting mix suitable for African violets or a mix of peat moss and perlite.
Container: Fill a seed tray or small pots with the prepared soil mix.
Sowing Depth: Scatter the seeds on the surface of the soil. Do not cover them with soil, as they need light to germinate.
Watering: Lightly mist the soil surface with water to keep it moist but not waterlogged.
Germination
Environment: Place the seed tray or pots in a warm area with a temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C). Provide bright, indirect light.
Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist by misting regularly or covering the seed tray with plastic wrap to retain humidity.
Time: Germination usually occurs within 2-4 weeks.
Transplanting
When to Transplant: Once the seedlings have a few true leaves and are large enough to handle.
New Container: Prepare individual pots with the same well-draining soil mix.
Transplanting Process: Carefully lift the seedlings and transplant them into the new pots, planting them at the same depth they were growing at in the seed tray.
Watering: Water gently after transplanting to settle the soil around the roots.
Care and Maintenance
Light: Ensure the plants receive bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering: Water from the bottom to avoid wetting the leaves, which can cause rot. Allow the soil surface to dry out slightly between waterings.
Temperature: Maintain a consistent temperature between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Pruning: Remove dead or yellowing leaves to encourage healthy growth and blooming.
