Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Asparagus seeds have tough seed coats that benefit from scarification to enhance germination. You can scarify them by lightly rubbing them with sandpaper or soaking them in warm water for 24 hours before planting.
Sowing:
Start seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch (0.6-1.25 cm) deep in seed starting trays filled with potting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 14-21 days when kept at a constant temperature of around 70°F (21°C). Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, they can be transplanted into larger pots or directly into the garden.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when the soil has warmed up and all danger of frost has passed. Choose a location with full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Space plants 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart in rows, with rows spaced 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first year of growth. Mulch around plants to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Asparagus plants are heavy feeders, so additional fertilizer may be needed throughout the growing season. Harvest asparagus spears when they are 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) tall and still tender. Cut them at soil level using a sharp knife or asparagus harvesting tool. Stop harvesting when the spears become thin and spindly, allowing the plant to grow and store energy for the next season.
Happy gardening!
