Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special seed preparation is necessary, but soaking the seeds in water for a few hours before planting can help speed up germination.
Sowing:
Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring or late summer/fall when temperatures are cooler. If starting indoors, sow seeds 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Sow seeds 1/4 inch (0.6 cm) deep and space them about 6 inches (15 cm) apart. Lightly cover seeds with soil and water gently.
Germination:
Green Chervil seeds typically germinate within 14-21 days. Keep the soil consistently moist during the germination period.
Transplanting:
If started indoors, transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for about a week before transplanting. Space plants 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) apart in rows 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest chervil leaves as needed, starting from the outer leaves. Regular harvesting encourages new growth. Monitor for pests such as aphids and snails, and treat as necessary using organic methods. Chervil tends to bolt in hot weather, so planting in partial shade or providing some afternoon shade can help prolong the harvest period.
Happy gardening!
