Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting to enhance germination.
Sowing:
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed trays or pots filled with seed-starting mix. Keep the soil consistently moist and at a temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C).
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 5-10 days under optimal conditions. Ensure the seedlings receive plenty of light, either from a sunny windowsill or grow lights, to prevent them from becoming leggy.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors 2-3 weeks before the last expected frost date, when they are about 4-6 inches tall and have at least 2-3 true leaves. Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7-10 days. Plant the seedlings 12-24 inches apart in rows spaced 24-36 inches apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Cabbage requires about 1-1.5 inches of water per week. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Support: Cabbage plants generally do not require support, but you can use stakes if plants become top-heavy. Harvesting: Harvest cabbage heads when they are firm and reach the desired size, usually 70-100 days after transplanting. Cut the heads off at the base with a sharp knife, leaving the outer leaves intact to protect the heads.
