Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required. Ensure seeds are stored in a cool, dry place until planting.
Sowing:
Plant seeds directly in the garden after the last frost date when the soil temperature is consistently above 65°F (18°C). Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep. For grain production, space seeds 4-6 inches apart in rows spaced 12-24 inches apart. For cover crop or forage, broadcast seeds and lightly rake them into the soil.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
Millet is best sown directly in the soil. If starting indoors, sow seeds in biodegradable pots 2-4 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when the soil has warmed.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry periods. Once established, millet is relatively drought-tolerant. Mulching: Apply mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilizing: Millet benefits from a balanced fertilizer or compost at planting time. Additional side-dressing with nitrogen may be needed during the growing season. Support: Millet typically does not require support. Ensure plants have enough space to grow and avoid overcrowding. Harvesting: For grain production, harvest millet when the seed heads are fully mature and dry. Cut the stalks and allow them to dry further if necessary before threshing to remove the seeds. For forage or cover crops, cut and use as needed when plants reach the desired height.
Gardening is the art that uses vegetable and plants as paint, and the soil and sky as canvas.
