Seed Preparation: Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before planting to soften the seed coat and enhance germination.
Sowing: Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last frost date when the soil temperature is at least 70°F (21°C). Alternatively, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date. Plant seeds 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep in the soil. Space seeds 24-36 inches (60-90 cm) apart in rows, with rows spaced 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters) apart.
Germination: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days. Provide ample sunlight for seedlings started indoors by placing them in a bright, sunny window or under grow lights.
Transplanting: Transplant seedlings outdoors once they have at least two sets of true leaves and all danger of frost has passed. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7-10 days. Plant seedlings at the same spacing as direct-sown seeds: 24-36 inches (60-90 cm) apart in rows spaced 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 meters) apart.
Care and Maintenance: Water plants deeply and regularly, especially during dry periods. Mulch around plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Provide support for vines by using trellises or allowing them to sprawl on the ground. Monitor for pests and diseases, and treat as necessary using organic methods. Harvest chilacayote fruits when they reach the desired size, typically when they are firm and green.
