Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation needed. For best results, soak seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing to improve germination.
Sowing:
Sow seeds directly in the garden as parsnips do not transplant well. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep, spacing them 3 inches apart in rows that are 12 to 18 inches apart. Sow in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, ideally 2-3 weeks before the last expected frost.
Germination:
Keep the soil consistently moist during the germination period. Germination can be slow, taking 14 to 28 days. Maintain a temperature of 50-70°F (10-21°C) during germination.
Transplanting: Not recommended as parsnips have long taproots that do not tolerate disturbance.
Care and Maintenance:
Thin seedlings to 6 inches apart when they are about 2 inches tall to allow ample space for root development. Water regularly, especially during dry periods, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Apply a balanced fertilizer if soil fertility is low, but avoid high nitrogen fertilizers that encourage leafy growth over root development. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest parsnips after the first frost for the best flavor, as the cold converts starches to sugars, enhancing their sweetness. Dig carefully to avoid damaging the roots, which can be stored in a cool, dark place for several weeks.
