Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak the seeds in water for 4-6 hours before planting to speed up germination.
Sowing:
Sow the seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring, or start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) deep and 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) apart in rows that are 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart. Cover seeds lightly with soil and water gently.
Germination:
Seeds will germinate in 5-14 days, depending on soil temperature. Maintain soil moisture but avoid waterlogging.
Transplanting (if started indoors):
Harden off seedlings for about a week before transplanting by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. Transplant seedlings to the garden when they have at least two true leaves and the danger of frost has passed. Space transplants 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) apart in rows that are 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the foliage. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Thinning: Thin seedlings to 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) apart when they are about 2 inches (5 cm) tall to ensure proper growth and air circulation. Harvesting: Begin harvesting leaves when they are large enough to use, usually about 4-6 weeks after sowing. Cut outer leaves first, allowing inner leaves to continue growing for a continuous harvest.
Happy gardening!
