Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours to improve germination rates. Optionally, you can stratify the seeds by placing them in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag and refrigerating for 1-2 weeks before planting.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date in your area. Use a seed-starting mix and plant seeds 1/4 inch deep. Maintain a soil temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C) for optimal germination. Space seeds at least 1-2 inches apart in seed trays or pots.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 14-21 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when the soil has warmed. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Plant seedlings 12-18 inches apart in rows spaced 24 inches apart to allow for ample growth.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but not waterlogged. Water at the base of the plants to prevent fungal diseases. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Harvesting: Harvest the roots in the fall, after the plants have fully matured, usually 6-7 months after planting. Carefully dig up the roots, wash them, and allow them to dry before use.
