Uses : Ornamental tree, coastal landscaping, erosion control, shade provider, and attracting wildlife such as birds and bees
Pack : 100 pcs/ 500 pcs/ 1000 pcs
Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak Seeds: Soak the Pohutukawa seeds in warm water for 24 hours. This helps to soften the seed coat and promote quicker germination.
Stratification (Optional): To increase germination rates, you can stratify the seeds by placing them in a moist paper towel, sealing them in a plastic bag, and refrigerating for 2-4 weeks.
Sowing:
Prepare Soil: Choose a well-draining potting mix. You can use a mix of peat, perlite, and sand for best results.
Planting Depth: Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly cover them with a thin layer (about 1-2 mm) of fine soil or sand.
Spacing: If planting in trays, space the seeds about 2-3 cm apart.
Germination:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mist the soil surface with water to avoid disturbing the seeds.
Temperature: Maintain a warm environment with temperatures between 18-24°C (64-75°F).
Time Frame: Germination can take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks. Be patient and keep the soil moist throughout this period.
Transplanting:
Seedling Size: Once seedlings have developed at least two sets of true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle, they are ready for transplanting.
Transplant Location: Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Prepare the planting site by loosening the soil and adding organic compost if necessary.
Planting Depth: Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the root system and plant the seedling at the same depth it was growing in the pot or tray.
Spacing: Space the seedlings 3-5 meters (10-16 feet) apart to allow for mature growth.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water young trees regularly to help establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, Pohutukawa trees are relatively drought-tolerant.
Pruning: Prune as necessary to shape the tree and remove any dead or damaged branches. Best done in late winter or early spring.
Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
