Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Cold stratify seeds by placing them in a moist paper towel inside a plastic bag and refrigerating for 4-6 weeks. This process mimics the natural winter dormancy period and improves germination rates.
Sowing:
After stratification, sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date. Fill seed trays or pots with a seed-starting mix and press seeds lightly onto the surface. Do not cover seeds as they require light to germinate. Mist the soil surface gently to moisten it.
Germination:
Place seed trays or pots in a bright, indirect light location with a temperature of around 65-70°F (18-21°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Seeds typically germinate within 2-4 weeks under optimal conditions.
Transplanting:
Once seedlings have at least two true leaves and all danger of frost has passed, they can be transplanted outdoors. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Plant seedlings 12-36 inches apart, depending on the variety, in a location with partial to full shade.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Hostas prefer evenly moist soil. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Pest Control: Monitor for slugs and snails, which are common pests for hostas. Use organic slug bait or traps if necessary. Dividing: Every 3-5 years, divide the hosta clumps in early spring or fall to maintain plant health and vigor.
