Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting to soften the hard seed coat and improve germination rates. Optionally, scarify the seeds by lightly sanding them with fine-grit sandpaper to help water penetrate the seed coat.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the last expected frost date. Use a seed-starting mix and plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in individual pots or seed trays. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 2-4 weeks, but germination can be slow and erratic, sometimes taking up to 10 weeks. Maintain a soil temperature of 70-85°F (21-29°C) for optimal germination. Ensure bright, indirect light and keep the soil moist.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Plant seedlings 3-5 feet apart in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Provide a trellis or support for the vines to climb.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods, but avoid waterlogging. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Pruning: Prune to control growth and shape the plant. Remove dead or damaged stems as needed. Support: Ensure that vines have adequate support to climb, such as a trellis or fence.
Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint, and the soil and sky as canvas.
