Rosella - Open Pollinated Seeds
Key Attributes:
Product Details:
Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is an open-pollinated variety known for its vibrant red calyces, which are used to make delicious jams, herbal teas, and sauces. This plant grows to a mature height of 4 to 7 feet, making it ideal for both ornamental and functional garden spaces. Rosella is also known for its medicinal properties and can be grown in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. The seeds are sustainably sourced, ensuring optimal freshness and germination for a healthy harvest.
Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting to enhance germination.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Use seed-starting trays or pots with a well-draining seed-starting mix. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and keep the soil moist.
Germination:
Maintain a temperature of 75-80°F (24-27°C) for germination. Seeds should germinate in 7-14 days.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost when they are about 3-4 inches tall. Space plants 2-3 feet apart in rows 3-4 feet apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Monitor for pests and diseases, and treat as necessary with organic or chemical controls.
Harvesting:
Harvest the rosella calyces when they are fully mature and deep red in color, typically 3-4 months after planting.
