Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Snakeroot seeds require cold stratification to improve germination. Place the seeds in a moist paper towel, seal them in a plastic bag, and store them in the refrigerator for 60 days before planting.
Sowing:
Sow seeds indoors in seed trays or pots filled with a seed-starting mix. Lightly press the seeds into the surface of the soil, but do not cover them, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist and maintain a temperature of 65-70°F.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 2-4 weeks under optimal conditions. Provide ample light, such as a sunny windowsill or grow lights, to encourage strong seedling growth.
Transplanting:
When seedlings have developed several true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Transplant the seedlings outdoors after the last frost, spacing them 12-18 inches apart in a location with partial to full shade and moist, well-drained soil.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. Mulch around the plants to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Remove spent flowers to encourage continued blooming and prevent self-seeding. Monitor for pests and diseases, though Snakeroot is generally pest-resistant. Cut back the plant in late fall after the first frost, if desired, to tidy up the garden.
Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as plants, and the soil and sky as canvas.
