Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Sorrel seeds do not require any special preparation before planting.
Sowing:
Sow the seeds directly in the garden or in seed trays/pots indoors. If sowing outdoors, choose a well-drained site with full sun to partial shade. Sow seeds in spring after the last frost or in early autumn. Sow seeds about 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) deep and 12 inches (30 cm) apart. If sowing in rows, space rows about 18 inches (45 cm) apart.
Germination:
Maintain soil moisture consistently to aid germination. Seeds should germinate within 7-14 days. If starting indoors, use seed trays or small pots filled with seed starting mix. Keep the trays or pots in a warm, bright location with indirect sunlight. Transplant seedlings outdoors when they are large enough to handle and after the danger of frost has passed.
Transplanting:
When seedlings have 2-3 true leaves and are 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) tall, they are ready for transplanting. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Transplant seedlings to the garden, maintaining the spacing mentioned above.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Sorrel is a perennial herb, so it will continue to grow and produce leaves year after year. Harvest leaves when they are young and tender for the best flavor. Cut leaves at the base of the plant, and new growth will continue to emerge. Remove any flowering stems to encourage more leaf production. Divide plants every 3-4 years to prevent overcrowding and maintain plant vigor.
Happy gardening!
