Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is necessary for basil seeds. They can be planted directly without soaking.
Sowing:
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date, or sow seeds directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting trays or directly into well-prepared garden soil. Space seeds 6-12 inches apart, as basil plants will spread as they grow.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 5-10 days under optimal conditions. Maintain a soil temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C) for best germination results. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
If started indoors, transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when they have developed 2-3 sets of true leaves. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week before planting in the garden.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Basil plants prefer consistently moist soil. Water regularly, especially during hot weather, but avoid waterlogging. Pruning: Pinch off flower buds as they form to encourage leaf production and prevent the plant from going to seed too early (unless you want seeds for future planting). Harvesting: Begin harvesting leaves once the plant has grown several sets of leaves. Harvest frequently to encourage new growth and prevent the plant from becoming woody.
