Shelf Life : Best planted within 1 year for maximum germination
Planting Instructions
Seed Preparation
Pre-Soak (Optional): Soak seeds in water for 12-24 hours before planting to speed up germination.
Sowing
Direct Sowing:
Sow seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (15°C).
Plant seeds 1 inch deep.
Space seeds 3-4 feet apart in rows 5-6 feet apart.
Indoor Starting (Optional):
Start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost date.
Use biodegradable pots that can be planted directly into the soil to minimize root disturbance.
Germination
Temperature : Maintain a soil temperature of 70-95°F (21-35°C) for optimal germination.
Time : Seeds typically germinate in 7-10 days.
Transplanting (if started indoors)
Timing : Transplant seedlings outdoors when they have at least two sets of true leaves and the soil temperature is consistently above 60°F (15°C).
Spacing : Space transplants 3-4 feet apart in rows 5-6 feet apart.
Care and Maintenance
Watering:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the leaves and reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
Mulching:
Apply a layer of mulch around the plants to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil temperature.
Support:
Provide support such as a trellis or cage if desired, although 'Honey Bear' squash typically has a bush growth habit that doesn't require much support.
Harvesting:
Harvest when the squash has reached full size and the skin is hard, usually about 85 days after planting.
Cut the squash from the vine, leaving a few inches of stem attached for better storage.
