Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before planting to speed up germination.
Sowing:
Sow seeds directly in the garden 2-4 weeks before the last frost date in spring, or as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow seeds 1/2 inch deep and 1 inch apart in rows spaced 12-18 inches apart. For continuous harvest, sow seeds every 2-3 weeks until mid-summer.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 5-10 days under optimal conditions. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
Transplanting:
Beets are best sown directly in the soil. If starting indoors, sow seeds in biodegradable pots 4-6 weeks before the last frost date and transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date when the soil has warmed.
Care and Maintenance:
Thinning: Thin seedlings to 3-4 inches apart when they are about 2 inches tall. Thinned seedlings can be transplanted or eaten as baby greens. Watering: Water regularly, providing about 1 inch of water per week. Ensure even moisture to prevent the roots from becoming woody. Mulching: Apply mulch around the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Weeding: Keep the area weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and water. Harvesting: Harvest beets when they are about 2-3 inches in diameter for the best flavor and texture. Gently pull the roots from the soil or loosen them with a garden fork. Leaves can be harvested as needed.
Gardening is the art that uses vegetable and plants as paint, and the soil and sky as canvas.
Happy gardening!
