Planting Instructions
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation is required for Courgette seeds. However, soaking the seeds in water for a few hours before planting can speed up germination.
Sowing:
Direct Sowing: Sow seeds directly in the garden after the last frost date when the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (16°C). Indoor Sowing: Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date. Plant seeds 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) deep in seed starting mix. Keep the soil moist and at a temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C).
Germination:
Seeds should germinate in 7-10 days. Ensure that the soil is consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Transplanting:
If started indoors, transplant seedlings to the garden when they have at least two sets of true leaves and after all danger of frost has passed. Space plants 24-36 inches (60-90 cm) apart in rows that are 36-48 inches (90-120 cm) apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during flowering and fruiting. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to disease. Mulching: Apply mulch around the plants to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain soil temperature. Weeding: Keep the planting area weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients and water. Harvesting: Harvest courgettes when they are 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) long for the best flavor and texture. Regular harvesting encourages continued fruit production.
Happy gardening!
