Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. After soaking, perform a cold stratification process by placing the seeds in a plastic bag with a moist medium (such as sand or peat moss) and refrigerating them for 2 to 3 months. This mimics winter conditions and helps break seed dormancy.
Sowing:
Fill seed trays or pots with a well-draining seed starting mix. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil or sand, about 1/8 inch deep. Water the soil gently to moisten it without disturbing the seeds.
Germination:
Place the seed trays or pots in a location with indirect light and a temperature of 60-70°F (15-21°C). Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination can be slow and may take several months. Be patient and continue to provide proper care.
Transplanting:
Once the seedlings are large enough to handle and have developed a few sets of true leaves, they can be transplanted. Gradually acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions by placing them outside for a few hours each day, increasing the time gradually over a week. Transplant the seedlings into their permanent location in the garden, spacing them about 3-5 feet apart if planting as a hedge, or more if planting as specimen trees.
Care and Maintenance:
Water the young plants regularly to establish a strong root system, especially during dry periods. Mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune as needed to shape and maintain the desired form, particularly if used for hedging or topiary. Monitor for pests such as aphids and scale, and treat as necessary. Yew trees are generally low-maintenance and resilient once established.
Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as plants, and the soil and sky as canvas.
Happy gardening!
