Planting Instructions: Seed Preparation:
Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours before planting. This helps to soften the seed coat and improve germination rates. Sowing:
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Fill seed trays with a seed-starting mix and sow seeds ¼ inch (6 mm) deep. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Cover the seed trays with a plastic dome or a clear plastic wrap to retain moisture. Germination:
Place the seed trays in a warm location with temperatures between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Germination usually occurs within 7-14 days. Once seedlings emerge, remove the plastic cover and provide ample light, either from a sunny window or grow lights. Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and when the soil temperature reaches at least 60°F (15°C). Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Space plants 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) apart in rows that are 3 feet (90 cm) apart. Care and Maintenance:
Water plants regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Avoid overhead watering to minimize the risk of disease. Apply mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Provide support for the plants with stakes or cages as they grow to keep the fruit off the ground. Prune lower leaves and suckers to improve air circulation and promote better fruit development.
