Shelf Life : Best planted within 1 year for maximum germination
Planting Instructions
Seed Preparation:
Chitting : About 2-4 weeks before planting, place the seed potatoes in a cool, bright area to encourage sprouting. Place them with the eyes facing up.
Sowing:
Timing : Plant the chitted seed potatoes in early spring, once the soil has warmed to around 50°F (10°C).
Spacing : Dig trenches 4 inches deep and place seed potatoes 12 inches apart, with rows spaced 24-36 inches apart. Cover with 2-3 inches of soil.
Germination:
Temperature : Optimal soil temperature for germination is between 60-70°F (15-21°C).
Emergence: Seedlings will typically emerge in 2-4 weeks.
Transplanting:
Hilling : When plants reach about 6 inches in height, gently mound soil around the base of the plants, covering the lower leaves. Repeat this process every few weeks to protect developing tubers from sunlight and to encourage tuber formation.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering : Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during tuber formation. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of foliar diseases.
Weeding : Regularly remove weeds to prevent competition for nutrients and water.
Pest and Disease Control: Monitor for common pests such as aphids, Colorado potato beetles, and wireworms. Use organic or chemical controls as necessary. Ensure good air circulation and crop rotation to minimize disease risks.
