Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat and promote faster germination.
Sowing:
Direct sow seeds outdoors after the last frost date when soil temperatures are consistently above 70°F (21°C). Alternatively, start seeds indoors 4 weeks before the last expected frost date. Plant seeds 1 inch deep in hills or mounds, spacing each seed about 6 inches apart. Space hills or mounds about 4-6 feet apart to allow for vine spread.
Germination:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Seeds typically germinate within 7-10 days under optimal conditions.
Transplanting:
If started indoors, transplant seedlings outdoors when they have at least 2-3 true leaves and all danger of frost has passed. Space the seedlings 4-6 feet apart to ensure proper growth and air circulation.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells. Ensure the soil is kept moist but not soggy to prevent root rot. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage. Mulching: Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds. Pruning: Pruning is generally not necessary, but you can trim back excessive vines to control growth and encourage larger fruit production. Harvesting: Watermelons are typically ready to harvest about 80-90 days after planting. Harvest when the fruit sounds hollow when tapped, the underside turns yellow, and the tendril closest to the fruit dries out.
