Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
No special preparation required. Kale seeds are easy to handle and plant directly.
Sowing:
Direct Sowing: Sow seeds directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, spaced 12-18 inches apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart. Indoor Sowing: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Sow seeds in seed trays or pots filled with seed-starting mix, 1/4 inch deep.
Germination:
Seeds typically germinate within 5-10 days. Maintain a soil temperature of 60-70°F (16-21°C) during the germination period. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Transplanting:
Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and they have at least 2-3 true leaves. Harden off seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week. Space seedlings 12-18 inches apart in rows spaced 18-24 inches apart.
Care and Maintenance:
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the leaves. Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Harvesting: Harvest leaves from the bottom of the plant as they reach a usable size, leaving the top growing point intact for continuous production. Kale can be harvested throughout the growing season and can withstand light frosts, which can improve its flavor.
