Planting Instructions:
Seed Preparation:
Soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting to soften the seed coat and improve germination rates.
Sowing:
Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Plant the seeds directly in the garden after the last frost, or start them indoors 4 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow seeds 1/2 to 1 inch deep, spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart in rows that are 4 to 5 feet apart. If starting indoors, use peat pots or seed trays filled with a quality seed starting mix.
Germination:
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Maintain a soil temperature of 70-85°F (21-29°C) for optimal germination. Seeds should germinate within 7-14 days.
Transplanting:
If started indoors, transplant seedlings to the garden when they have at least two true leaves and all danger of frost has passed. Harden off the seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over a week.
Care and Maintenance:
Provide a trellis or support structure for the vines to climb, which helps to keep the fruits clean and makes harvesting easier. Water regularly to keep the soil moist, especially during dry periods. Avoid overhead watering to prevent disease. Mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Monitor for pests such as aphids, squash bugs, and cucumber beetles, and treat as necessary. Harvest the fruits when they are still young and tender, typically 8-10 inches long, for the best flavor. Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the fruit from the vine.
Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as plants, and the soil and sky as canvas.
Happy gardening!
